Hungarian football mourns András Törőcsik

The Hungarian football world is mourning the loss of former international forward András Törőcsik after the player most famous for his exploits at Újpest Dózsa passed away aged 67.

Törőcsik was born in the Budapest district of Zugló in 1955 and made one appearance for the youth national team before transferring from local club BVSC to Újpest Dózsa aged 19.

Immediately the diminuitive forward impressed with his silky dribbling skills and range of passing, his goals and assists propelling Újpest to league championship titles in 1974-75, 1977-78 and 1978-79, as well as gracing the international scene where he represented Hungary at the 1978 and 1982 World Cups. A car accident in 1979 irrevocably changed the course of his career though, and 'Törő', as he was affectionately known, never reached the same heights as he had previously, when he was in contention for selection to FIFA World XI's and player-of-the-year awards.

He was still able to delight fans and inspire teams though, Újpest winning the Hungarian Cup on three occasions (1975, 1982 and 1983) and progressing to the 1983/84 European Cup Winners' Cup quarter-finals thanks to his match-winning and game-changing performances. A move to Montpellier followed before a return to Hungary with Volán and then MTK marked the last significant s in his career, one which yielded 45 international caps and hundreds of thousands of fans of his magical skill at home and abroad.
