Hungarian football mourns legend László Fazekas

Hungarian football is in mourning today after learning that one of Újpest Dózsa's legendary forward line from the 1960s and 1970s, László Fazekas, has passed away after a long illness, aged 78.

Fazekas made his Újpest Dózsa debut in November 1965 and became one of the first names on the Lilac-and-Whites' teamsheet for the next 15 years. The winger/inside forward played in both legs of the 1969 Fairs Cup final against Joe Harvey's men and the 1974 European Cup semi-final against eventual winners Bayern Munich during a period in which his club became the dominant force domestically.

Fazekas was a consistent goalscorer from anywhere across the forward line for his entire career with Újpest Dózsa, Hungary (including appearances at two World Cups and one European Championship) and for Royal Antwerp and Sint-Truiden in Belgium. He was a nine-time (!) Hungarian league champion, three-time Hungarian Cup winner, scored 252 goals in 408 top-flight appearances for Újpest, a further 24 goals in 92 matches for the Hungarian national team, won the 1968 Olympic football medal with Hungary in Mexico and was Europe's Silver Boot winner in 1980.

A move to Royal Antwerp materialised in 1982 and he spent three hugely successful years in Belgium before retiring and taking up numerous coaching roles, while continuing to be based abroad. In recent years, he bravely battled against the debilitating multiple sclerosis disease.
