Markó hands back women's team reins after seven years
A week after the end of the 2021 Women's European Championship qualifying group stage's conclusion, Edina Markó has resigned from her position as Hungary head coach, having led the women's national team in 89 matches since 2014.
The outgoing head coach took charge of Hungary Women for the first time on March 7th, 2014, at the Istria Cup in Croatia, her last match coming against Iceland at home on December 1, 2020.
Markó started working for the adult national team under István Bacsó, then worked as head coach of the U19 team, with whom she participated in the 2005 Women's Under-19 European Championship in Hungary. She possesses a UEFA Pro coaching licence, and, in her seven years as full national-team coach, has presided over a generational change in the squad, with countless talented young women given the opportunity to show their skills.
"These were the hardest but most beautiful seven years of my life that I spent at the head of the women’s national team. I am proud to have been able to work with great players, individuals and great professionals amongst my staff, and I am very grateful to the Hungarian Football Federation for this opportunity," Edina Markó told mlsz.hu.
If we look at the whole history of Hungarian football, only Lajos Baróti (117) has led a full Hungarian national side more times than Edina Markó, and if we add together the national-team appearances as a player and head coach, Edina Markó (89 + 55 = 144), is the record-holder ahead of Kálmán Mészöly (61 + 61 = 122).
