Hungary Women put four past Luxembourg
Hungary Women eased to a 4-0 victory against Luxembourg in a friendly match at the Új Hidegkuti Nándor Stadion in Budapest, goals from Zsófia Mayer, Sára Pusztai, Zsanett Kaján and Henrietta Csiszár securing an impressive win.
The two national teams were meeting for the first time in their history, and it was the hosts who started the match best, Emőke Pápai's finish from Evelin Fenyvesi's left-wing cross on the left side being disallowed in the third minute due to offside. In the 10th minute Zsófia Mayer put Anna Csiki in with a sight of goal, but the latter misjudged the ball and missed the target. Shortly afterwards, after a melee inside the Luxembourg penalty area, Pápai's shot hit the left post and in the 15th minute, Viktória Szabó put the ball on to the head of the Werder Bremen striker, but Pápai's header was saved by the Luxembourg goalkeeper. Hungary dominated the first half, dictating the tempo and enjoying much more possession of the ball.
In the 23rd minute, Anna Csiki fired over the top right corner of the goal from 17 metres, then in the 27th minute Hungary goalkeeper Lauren Brzykcy was finally called into action to make a brilliant save. Eventually, Hungary's near-total dominance paid off with a goal in the 28th minute when Zsófia Mayer, in just her fourth match for the national team, slotted the ball into the net after a pass from Viktória Szabó out on the left. A minute later, Sára Pusztai doubled the home team's advantage and that could gave stretched to three before the break, only for Henrietta Csiszár's shot to be gathered by a grateful visiting goalkeeper.
Substitute Zsanett Kaján, who had replaced Anna Csiki just after the hour mark, did score Hungary's third goal eventually though, her shot rolling under the goalkeeper's feet and behind the goal line in the 65th minute. Ten minutes later, Fanni Nagy crossed the ball into the middle, for the arriving Henrietta Csiszár to slam the ball into the lower right corner of the goal. In the 81st minute, Zsófia Mayer surged in from the right and shot at goal, but the Luxembourg goalkeeper was equal to it. The last chance to score came in the 90th minute, but Hanna Németh headed a corner kick just off target.
"We achieved our aim, which was we wanted to win whatever happened, but that’s how we approach every match. The tactical elements we practised in the past few days worked well, and our defence was completely secure," assessed head coach Alexandra Szarvas.
Szarvas's team doesn't have long to wait until its next fixture, because the team will take to the pitch in Szent, Slovakia, at 4pm on 28th October in a friendly match against the hosts.
