New U17s aiming for Euro Elite-round qualification in Minsk
Hungary's Under-17 squad born in 2003 start their Euro qualification campaign against hosts Belarus on Thursday.
The Hungarian men's U17 squad led by Antal Németh faces a tough task in the next few days as they look to advance from their European Championship first qualifying-round group in Belarus.
The four-team mini-tournament begins with our fixture against hosts Belarus on Thursday, before the second match against Latvia on Sunday and a potentially crucial contest against Serbia next Wednesday. The top two finishers in the group will progress to spring's Elite round, and the top four third-paced teas across all the groups will also progress.
"Two players, Ágoston Bényei and László Benkő, can't play due to injury but everyone else in the squad is in good shape and fully focused on the tournament", Hungary U17s head coach Antal Németh told mlsz.hu. "It won't be easy to qualify because hosts Belarus and Serbia have very strong lineups with Latvia probably behind them at this stage. We start with the Belarusians and this match will be decisive. The hosts have a very strong age group of those born in 2003 and it's not by chance that they wanted to organise the tournament; they are very confident of progressing. We have seen seven games of theirs, so we know they have an organised, physically-imposing team, but we are prepared for them and we want to start the tournament well", Németh concluded.
