Record number of women's teams aiming to join national league

The application period for teams to enter the women’s league championship is now over, a record 29 clubs signalling their intentions to participate in the country's second tier of football.

The development of women's football is a key strategic aim for MLSZ, which has, for many years now, devoted considerable energy to widenng the base of women's football. The success of these efforts and the gradual development of the women's game is indicated by the fact that this summer 29 adult women's clubs have indicated their desire to compete in the country's second division, a historic record in domestic women's football. The adult women’s season is due to begin in mid-August.

"When we initiated the development of women's football in 2013, we knew that the results would come only slowly and gradually as young people grow up and as attitudes of the football community towards women's football change," MLSZ's Executive Committee member and Women's Football Committee chairman Gábor Török told mlsz.hu. "One of the longstanding problems in the game was that there were very few adult women's clubs playing 11-a-side football and there were years when the number of teams in the two divisions of the national championship barely reached twenty. This is exactly why the current data is pleasing. On one hand, it shows that the results of development strategies are slowly becoming visible at adult level, and on the other hand, including the eight top-tier clubs, there will be a total of nearly forty women's teams competing in the two national divisions".

In recent years, the number of teams has not only grown gradually at adult level, but also at youth level. Indeed, by 2019 we were able to say that there are no more white spots on the map in terms of women’s football and that there are women’s youth football clubs in every region of Hungary.
