Zsóri: Puskás Award will only mean something if I continue my hard work
Daniel Zsóri slept with the award on the night of the FIFA gala and he's already now looking forward to leaving his injury behind and scoring more goals, something he discussed with the media on landing in Budapest from Milan.
The 18-year-old forward, now of Fehérvár, beat Lionel Messi and Juan Fernando Quintero to the Goal of the Year award at FIFA's The Best Gala on Monday night. The player, who hails from the former Hungarian territory of Nagyvárad in current-day western Romania, scored his overhead kick for Debrecen VSC to secure three points against prospective league champions Ferencváros last season.
"The stars came in one after the other and I was just expecting it to end and then to go home to train, play a match, score goals..." said Zsóri, who has become the first Hungarian to win the FIFA Puskás Award for Goal of the Year.
The MOL Fehervar FC football player admitted that his first action was to call his parents and that later, he slept with the trophy in his bed before then explaining that the Puskás Award is not just for him, but for the country as a whole, but that it would be worthless if he didn't work hard from here on.
"I can promise you that I will do my best to have a successful career", said the 18-year-old, who has been injured for two weeks but is expected to start training on his own on Wednesday.
Zsóri, from Simonyifalva in Transylvania, emphasised that he counts himself as Hungarian, saying he doesn't speak much Romanian, so it is not a question that he would choose to wear the shirt with the Hungarian badge.
