Bulgaria to be Hungary's first opponent in play-offs

European Football's governing body (UEFA) has conducted the draw for the Nations' League play-offs, which will also serve as the way of allocating the final four qualifying places for the UEFA 2020 men's European Championship. The Hungarian national team will start in Bulgaria and, if they prevail there, would host either Iceland or Romania in the new Puskás Arena.

Twenty out of 24 places in next year's European Championship have been decided following the conclusion of the European Championship group-stage qualifiers in November, Croatia and Wales pipping Hungary to spots at next summer's showpiece event, which will be partly hosted by Budapest. The remaining four places will go to the winners of each division of the Nations League, the group stages of which concluded late last year. It is due to Hungary's impressive campaign in the inaugural Nations League that Marco Rossi's team is able to contest one of these four spots in the play-offs in March 2020.

UEFA held its play-off draw at noon on Friday, after which it was decided that the Hungarian national team would continue its Nations League campaign in Division A, from which only Iceland had failed to already reach the 2020 European Championship. After Division A had been filled up, it turned out that Hungary would be required to travel to Bulgaria in the play-off semi-finals, while Iceland will host Romania. If we defeat Bulgaria, we will play at home in the Puskás Arena against the winner of the other semi-final.

The single-leg semi-finals will be held on 26th March and if the Hungarian national team can negotiate that, they will then play in the final at Puskás Arena on 31st March.

Our opponent on 26th March, Bulgaria, were in qualifying Group A of the European Championship qualifiers and finished fourth with six points, winning only one out of eight matches, and that the last one 1-0 against Czech Republic who had already qualified.
