Csiszár strike earns draw in Malta
Despite dominating the second of two matches against hosts Malta, Alexandra Szarvas's Hungary Women had to settle for a 1-1 draw in the Centenary Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
Following Friday's first match behind closed doors, Tuesday's second fixture was played in front of a number of spectators at Malta's Centenary Stadium and they were treated to a first half dominated by a Hungary team which was unable to find the finishing to complement their overall control. Diana Csányi slid Anna Csiki's pass wide of the the right post in the 26th minute before Csiszár and Victória Szabó both tested Malta's goalkeeper with efforts on goal, to no reward.
In contrast, the second half open with a Hungarian goal almost immediately, Csiszár exchanging passes with Emőke Pápai before driving the ball into the net from within the Malta penalty area. Unfortunately though, the visitors' lead didn't last long, the home team equalising via a penalty which ultimately proved enough for a draw, despite Hungary continuing to dominate possession of the ball for the remaining 37 minutes.
Alexandra Szarvas, Hungary Women head coach:
"Again, we controlled the whole match and we saw a similar pattern of the game to that of the first fixture (last Friday) - it yielded at least 15 goalscoring chances, from which we could only score one goal. Whatever happens, we must fix this in the future, because at this level, every team is able to defend and for the whole 90 minutes too. If you don't score your opportunities, you're not going to win games, even against weaker opponents than you on paper. In general, I'm satisfied with the ten-day training camp we've had, because the girls have worked very well and we've been able to build new tactical elements into our game, but we play football for goals... We're looking forward to the Nations League before which there won't be any more training camps. but we know what we need to improve and we'll be able to fall back on what already works in our game."
