ETO claim Women's Hungarian Cup for first time

ETO FC Győr Fanni Nagy took advantage of Haladás' secon-half missed penalty to strike the winning goal in a tight, well-contested Simple Hungarian Cup final in the Új Hidegkuti Nándor Stadion on Wednesday night.

Three-time Women's Hungarian Cup winners Haladás-Viktória and second-time finalist ETO FC Győr were placed 4th and 2nd in the Hungarian top tier ahead of Hungarian domestic women's football's showpiece event, the latter still looking for their first ever title in this competition after Ferencváros pipped them to glory on their only other final appearance in 2017.

An attritional first half saw the best chance come as late as the 44th minute, Tiffany Cameron seeing her effort saved by Haladás goalkeeper Barbara Bíró. The first major talking point of the game came after the break in the 50th minute, when Csilla Savanya's handball gave Andrea Herczeg the chance to hand Haladás the lead from the penalty spot, but ETO goalkeeper Kateryna Samson went the right way and made a splendid save.

ETO, coached by Balázs Dörnyei, who had already won the competition six times as Ferencváros coach, weren't going to let their opportunity slip away and their winning goal came on the hour mark, Fanni Nagy latching on to a half-cleared corner and finding the net with aplomb. ETO preserved their lead with relative ease and could even have scored more, but in the end it was Nagy's goal which made the difference and secured the forward the first trophy of her career.

The medals were presented thereafter by MLSZ Competitions Director Tibor Vámos and former Hungarian international footballer Mária Kiss.

"One can't say one gets used to Cup glory, because one can never say that, but this success now is really a special experience", Dörnyei said after the match. "This is a completely new team, a new community, so it's a fantastic feeling that we can achieve happiness with so many new people. I'd like to thank the supporters who followed us in such numbers and encouraged the girls. My players really played as a proper team today".
