Experience and familiarity characterise Hungary's Euro 2024 squad
Hungary men's head coach Marco Rossi has selected a 26-man squad for this summer's European Championship, the maximum size permitted by UEFA for each of the 24 nations competing in the showpiece event in Germany. Several players missing from the two most recent matches in March have been recalled by head coach Marco Rossi, who has opted mainly for experience in his main group but has also named five reserves, all but one of whom are relatively fresh to the international scene.
Alongside most of those who featured in March's double-header against Kosovo and Turkey, the names of returnees to Rossi's squad for the forthcoming European Championship include Endre Botka, Kevin Csoboth, Attila Fiola, Mihály Kata and Péter Szappanos, the latter of whom was a member of the squad throughout last year's qualifying campaign. Rossi and his coaching staff have decided to name a reserve list instead of calling up more than 26 names in a bigger provisional squad, because training with more players would have reduced the effectiveness of the sessions, which would have meant optimal preparation for the European Championships would not have been possible.
"Whilst compiling the squad, we considered a range of aspects as well as player performance, including who was part of our journey in 2023 to qualify for this European Championship," Rossi told mlsz.hu. "In addition, we didn't see an outstanding performance from any player not yet considered, so the call-up of a new squad member wasn't justified for this reason either. However, I would like to especially mention our third goalkeeper: Péter Szappanos was with us all year last year, and in addition to his on-pitch performance, he was a key person in the group and played a huge role in creating team unity, which is why I decided to choose him. Fellow goalkeeper Balázs Tóth performed excellently when he was with us in March and (although a reserve here and not in the main squad) there is no doubt he'll be an important member of the Hungarian national team in the future.
Attila Fiola and Ádám Lang suffered injuries recently, but we're in constant contact with them and we know they'll be fit soon, then we'll have two weeks before the European Championship to assess their form. If it'd be necessary, we'd be able to make changes, because we have reserves."

"Fortunately, our preparation period will be longer than those of our opponents," Rossi explained. "We'll start work on 27th May, even though the official FIFA days will only start a week later. This has always been an advantage in the past, so we hope this will again be the case this time.
We'll play two warm-up matches - away against Republic of Ireland on 4th June and at home in Debrecen versus Israel four days later on 8th June - and after that, we'll have a few days to finish off our preparations in Germany, during which we'll pay maximum attention to all areas (of our game). Thanks to the extra days we'll have, we'll also pay a little more attention to the physical side of our preparations, although we shouldn't overdo it, because our players will arrive to Telki at the end of a long season."
The national team members will start their preparations at the national-team training centre in Telki on 27th May, but Martin Ádám, Bendegúz Bolla, Dániel Gazdag and Callum Styles will join the group a little later. Hungary's national squad will travel to Dublin on 3rd June, the venue of the match against Republic of Ireland the next day, and from there, the day after the game, the group will return to Telki to prepare for its last pre-tournament friendly against Israel on 8th June, a fixture which will take place in the Nagyerdei Stadium in Debrecen.
Marco Rossi's side will travel to Germany, the host country of the 2024 UEFA European Championship, on 10th June, in accordance with UEFA regulations, where they will play their group matches against Switzerland in Cologne on 15th June, hosts Germany on 19th June and Scotland on 23rd June, the latter two fixture both to be played in Stuttgart.
