Fiola: We'll do our best to spring a surprise in Munich

Attila Fiola, one of the heroes of Saturday's European Championship draw against France, and András Schäfer, one of the national squad's young talents, made themselves available to journalists in the aftermath of that memorable 1-1 result against the reigning world champions.

Just as during the night which followed the match against Portugal, I didn’t sleep at all on Saturday night, but now more due to happiness", admitted Fiola. "I'm very proud to be a member of this team and I'm very happy that we were able to bring joy to millions of Hungarians. I think it may take months or even years for me to grasp what happened against the French. The feeling after my goal was incredible!".

Fiola disclosed that he replayed his goal hundreds of times the night after the match and that his jersey from the match against France will adorn the wall of his home with the signatures of his teammates on it.

"I was able to be here for my second European Championship; I could play, I scored a goal, maybe now I've been experiencing my best days. From here, life really has given something back to me after that injury I sustained in the first match of the European Championship five years ago. On the other hand, I was at the right age at that time and I could have had some great opportunities if I'd produced more good performances. After the first match, everyone was bitter and annoyed because we'd let slip one point from our grasps in the final minutes. The fact that we were able to recover from that is a great team statement. We can now travel to Munich with confidence. We’re not the favourites and Germany are one of the best teams in the world, but we’ll do everything we can to spring a surprise".

At the press conference held at the national team's press centre, the fantastic support of the fans was naturally also discussed:

"I don't think there's such an atmosphere anywhere else as there can be in the Puskás Arena", Fiola explained. "I hope that Hungarians can come to the match in Munich as well. Their encouragement means a lot to us, and to me personally".

Next up to the mic was András Schäfer, who answered a question about his explosion on to the international scene. "We talk to Zsolt Kalmár (whose place he took) almost every hour. I am very sorry for the injured players, but their bad luck is now my good luck and it has been the case since I was able to join the squad. If the opportunity is here, you have to live with it, and I tried to live with it.

I think my career has taken a very good turn after my brief period in Italy. I’m one of the happiest people in the world to be here at the European Championship and to be given valuable minutes of play by the head coach. Of course, if someone is playing in such a big tournament, it can be noticed by big clubs, but for now I will focus exclusively on the Germany match, as an important contest awaits us and we hope to be able to play even more matches after it. The atmosphere at home in the stadium with the sixty thousand fans was a huge help to us, and after yesterday's match, maybe we have the boost we need to achieve good results away from home too".

The 22-year-old midfielder was also asked by journalists about the confidence he shows with the national team:

I’ve always been this kind of character and whenever I didn’t have confidence, there were always people still standing by me who would help and support me".

Hungary take on Germany in the Allianz Arena in Munich at 21:00 CET on Wednesday evening needing a win to stand a chance of qualifying from Group F to the knockout stages. At the same time, the group's other fixture, France v Portugal, will take place in Budapest's Puskás Aréna.
