Four debutants in men's new Nations League squad
Hungary head coach Marco Rossi has called up 26 players for his first squad of the new season, the priority for selection being that members are playing regularly and putting in international-class performances for their clubs.
Bence Gergényi, Tamás Nikitscher, Gábor Vas and Antal Yaakobishvili are the new names in Rossi's latest squad for the opening two matches of the 2024/25 UEFA Nations League, but recent, young call-ups such as Pál Dárdai and Balázs Tóth are also back in the mix after missing out on Euro 2024 selection.
"One of the most influential factors in this selection process was that numerous players of ours are not playing regularly for their clubs", Rossi told www.mlsz.hu. "I can't count on them, so this gave an excellent opportunity to call up youngsters whom we've been observing for a while play regularly and well at club level. For example, Antal Yaakobishvili has played in all his club's pre-season warm-up matches and although he hasn't yet appeared in a competitive game, this was still the right time to select him for the national squad.
Balázs Tóth has also returned to the goalkeepers' group. I think it's exceptionally good that next to our two top-class goalkeepers, Gulácsi and Dibusz, a young talent gets an opportunity, certainly now that (Péter Szappanos) has just in the past few days signed a contract to play in Saudi Arabia, so it would've been pointless to have called him up now anyway. Vas and Gergényi are also appearing regularly for their clubs and we've watched them for a long time. Now that we're not calling up some of our defenders due to lack of match fitness, it almost goes without saying that these two should get their chance now. In the midfield, Callum (Styles) is also on the sidelines, therefore I decided to bring in Nikitsch, who has great attributes; he's tall, a good header, positions himself well and doesn't have any serious weaknesses so it'll be good to get to know him personally as a player too. In attack, Pál Dárdai also returns to the fold. He's played nearly every pre-season match for Hertha and will be here together with his brother Márton, so I hope they'll play together more and more as starters in Berlin."
This year's Nations League sees Hungary travel to Germany first, before then hosting Bosnia & Hercegovina in the Puskás Aréna.
"There'll be four or five changes to Germany's lineup from the European Championship, because several players have retired", Rossi continued. "Even then though, the replacements in these positions will be players from top leagues. Julian Nagelsmann has at least 50 top players he can choose from to comprise his squad, so the Germans operate at a different level to us, but regardless of this, we'll do everything we can to make it difficult for them - were won't be entering the pitch with our hands up! If we look at Bosnia & Herzegovina, they have a new head coach, so we know little about how they'll play, but this is a physically strong team which presses high and they're not in League A of the Nations League by accident. This situation is the same as it was in Euro 1024 in that it's impossible to face a weak opponent. If anyone thinks they'll be weak opponents, they're making a big mistake!"
Hungary's squad will gather on Monday 2nd September at the national training centre in Telki before travelling to Düsseldorf to play Germany on 7th September. Rossi's squad will return to Hungary shortly after that match to prepare for their home fixture versus Bosnia & Hercegovina on 10th September. Tickets for this latter match will go on sale on the meccsjegy.mlsz.hu webpage on 2nd September.
