Four English-based players feature in latest Hungary Men's squad
Head coach Marco Rossi has called up 24 players for his squad to host the Netherlands and travel to Bosnia in the latest rounds of Nations League fixtures, the list including potential debutants and returning familiar faces.
Another player plying his trade at club level in England has been selected for Hungary international duty in the form of Kornél Szűcs, who plays for Championship club Plymouth Argyle under coach Wayne Rooney. The 23 year-old defender joins the list of players who've impressed enough at Under-21 level to earn selection to the full squad. Amongst those returning to international duty after recent duty, goalkeeper Péter Szappanos is glad to be back after completing his recent move to Saudi Arabian club Al Fateh, while veteran Attila Fiola is back too after completing a transfer to domestically-based Ùjpest FC.
It's certainly a tough task that awaits Rossi and his men next, because the Nations League A Division features the continent's 16 best teams and Hungary's two forthcoming opponents, Netherlands and Bosnia, certainly fit that description.
"Here, we've been able to select players who had to miss out in September for one reason or another, injuries or other reasons", Rossi told www.mlsz.hu. "On the other hand, we're not able to count on Péter Gulácsi this time, due to his heavy workload at club level and our preference this autumn to preserve his fitness and avoid any other injuries, given he not long ago recovered from a serious knee operation. It's in the national team's interests that we ensure there are ready-made replacements for Gula should anything happen to us in his position. In terms of debutants, Kornél Szűcs recently moved to Plymouth, where he's playing regularly and performing well, so now, due also to Gergényi's injury and Vas's lack of match fitness, this is the best time for us to be assured of his qualities close up."
There are no easy matches in Division A of the Nations League, because every team is a member of this group based on their earlier results. The Netherlands are much stronger than Hungary based on their FIFA world ranking, while Bosnia are much better than their current ranking suggests.
"We know very well the playing strength that the Netherlands represent", Rossi continued. "It's not a question either that in our group they're competing with Germany for top spot and that they're heavy favourites against us too. Having said that, this match is very important to us, but it's also true that Bosnia-Hercegovina match means even more, because we likely need to win to avoid being relegated from Division A, while against the Netherlands form on paper would suggest we could lose, although the manner of any such defeat would also be important."
"As I've said many times before, if we produce our best form, they don't and we also get a bit of good luck, then gaining a point or three is not impossible, but for that, all three of those things must happen. The most important is that we produce a good performance!", Rossi concluded.
Hungary's squad members will meet at Telki on 7th October ahead of their first match against the Netherlands in the Puskás Aréna four days later. Then, on 14th October, Hungary will find themselves the guests of Bosnia-Hercegovina. Tickets for the first of the two matches, at home, are still available on the meccsjegy.mlsz.hu webpage.
