Fradi create history with fourth Hungarian Cup success

A thrilling Förch Women's Hungarian Cup final on Thursday evening saw Ferencváros deservedly defeat Diosgyőr 3-1 in the New Nándor Hidegkúti Stadium.

Both teams had brought a large and noisy set of fans which contributed to the raucously good-natured atmosphere created by 1,200 spectators throughout this showpiece event, which had to endure almost constant driving rain.

As expected, it was Ferencváros who dictated the play against their opponents who had already acquitted themselves well as NBI debutants this season and it was the Budapest club which took a 30th-minute lead when Inna Zlidnis controlled a long pass well, outfoxed two defenders and drove a low left-footed shot across the DVTK goalkeeper and into the far-right corner of the net.

The team from Miskolc refused to be cowed though and could easily have equalised befoe the half-time break had Veldman not missed the target when presented with a clear sight of goal.

A deserved leveller was not much longer in coming though, Veldman making no mistake with a close-range rebound in the 54th minute after an effort from distance had struck the woodwork. Unfortunately, the challengers to the Hungarian Cup crown which Fradi has worn for the past three years weren't able to celebrate for long, a goalkeeping mistake in the 64th minute allowing Fanni Diószegi to steal the ball inside the penalty area and slot it into an empty net.

Diosgyőr spent their last reserves of energy pushing for an equaliser but they were unable to engineer one and instead Diószegi scored her second when she dispossessed a defender deep on the right wing and surged into the penalty area before crashing a fierce shot just instead the goalkeeper's near post to seal Ferencváros' fourth successive Hungarian Cup triumph, a competition record.

Förch Women's Hungarian Cup final:

DVTK 1-3 Ferencváros (HT: 0-1)
Goalscorers: DIÓ: Veldman (53.), FTC: Zlidnis (30.), Diószegi (62., 89.)
