Fradi Women create Hungarian Cup history
Despite falling behind in just the second minute of the 2021 Hungarian Cup final, Ferencváros eased to a comprehensive 5-1 victory over Astra to claim a record sixth triumph in the competition, pulling clear of Szent László Korház on five wins.
Balázs Dörnyei's Ferencváros side were the overwhelming favourites coming into this showpiece event at MTK's Új Hidegkuti Nándor Stadion in Budapest, having dispatched Hungarian league leaders MTK 4-0 in their semi-final, while Astra had reached their third final ever - after victory in 2012 and defeat to MTK in 2013 - by earning a hard-fought win against Diósgyőr in the last four.
Astra sprung an early surprise too, taking a 2nd-minute lead through Inna Zlidnis' own goal, the first goal that Ferencváros had conceded in the whole Cup campaign so far, but normal service was soon resumed, Evelin Fenyvesi levelling matters in the 8th minute and Melisa Hasanbegovic edging the Green and Whites into the lead four minutes later.
The scoreiine remained the same until the 48th minute when Lilla Sipos's own goal doubled Fradi's advantage, one which was extended just after the hour mark when Elizabeth Brandon converted Virág Nagy's precise pass. Fanni Vágó then put the seal on an excellent evening's work for her side by latching on to a superb Sára Pusztai pass and adding a fifth goal in the 85th minute.
The medals for the finalists and the trophy for the winning team were presented by Márton Vági, General Secretary of MLSZ, and Diána Déri, a member of the MLSZ Women's Committee.
In the other final to take place at the Hidegkuti Nándor Stadion on Wednesday, the Hungarian Amateur Cup final, Dunavarsány held on to defeat Tarpa 2-1, having led by two goals with just 11 minutes remaining. The two clubs from the counties of Pest and Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg respectively had reached this final by virtue of being the two amateur clubs to have gone the furthest in the MOL Hungarian Cup earlier this season.
