FTC Women seal league and cup double
Having already claimed the Women's Hungarian Cup this season, FTC-Telekom followed up last Saturday's 3-0 victory over MTK with another hardfought triumph, this time by a 3-2 scoreline, to take an unassailable lead in the best-of-3 championship final and therefore secure the Hungarian league title.
In similarity to last Saturday, the teams again started fearlessly and at a high tempo. MTK Hungária played an open style, bravely committing to an attacking game, but nevertheless it was hosts Ferencváros who a 10th-minute lead through top goalscorer Fanni Vágó's fierce shot just under the crossbar. The green and whites dominated for a period thereon and doubled their lead in the 22nd minute when Tiffany Cameron latched onto Vágó's pass and slotted the ball past Anna Samu in the MTK goal.
By the middle of the first half, it seemed that the championship title had been decided, even though MTK Hungária were far from playing badly, but the visitors fell further behind when Vágó again took on the role of provider, this time for substitute Sára Pusztai who made no mistake.
To their credit, MTK battled gamely and reduced the arrears in the 56th minute when Petra Kocsán converted a penalty. Ten minutes later, Barbara Szemán-Tóth, scored one of the goals of the season, to pull MTK Hungária to within a goal of Ferencváros but despite an exciting last 25 minutes there were to be no more goals. FTC-Telekom therefore won the second match of the championship final 3–2 and thus the Simple Women's League 2020-2021 championship title.
