Hungarian Cup: Honvéd for the eighth time or a debut win for Mezőkövesd?
An experienced Cup finalist and a major final debutant will battle for the right to hold aloft the Hungarian Cup in the Puskás Aréna from 20:00 on Wednesday.
In light of the government's recent decision, a limited number of Kispest and Mezőkövesd supporters will be able to be present at tomorrow's Hungarian Cup final in the new national stadium, the Puskás Aréna. Fans can purchase tickets for the match online at meccsjegy.mlsz.hu.
Mezőkövesd-Zsóry FC will definitely be writing club history this week as they participate in their first ever Hungarian Cup final, while their opponents Budapest Honvéd will be contesting their 19th such occasion, the most recent coming only last year. Of those previous 18 appearances, seven have resulted in Cup success, the most recent being in 2009.
It is noteworthy that both team's head coaches and senior-assistant coaches played for the Hungarian national team and all have won the Hungarian Cup as players too. The man in charge of Mezőkövesd, Attila Kuttor, has won the coveted trophy four time, thrice with MTK in 1997, 1998 and 2000 and once with Fehérvár in 2006, while his assistant Mihály Tóth lifted the Cup twice, once with Honvéd in 1996 and then again nine years later with Sopron. Honvéd head coach István Pisont tasted cup success in 1989 as a Honvéd player, as did his assistant László Dajka with the same club in 1985. It should be added that Pisont also won Israel's national cup while playing abroad and Tóth won the Norwegian Cup during his stint on foreign football pastures.
Furthermore, Kuttor and Pisont were national-team colleagues when they both took to the pitch to face Poland in 1994 when József Verebes coached Hungary. Whichever head coach is successful tomorrow will break at least one record because it is already certain that for the first time since 2013, a team coached by a Hungarian will win the national cup. Since Elemér Kondás led Debrecen to the title that year, Nebojsa Vignjevic has won it in 2014 and 2018, Thomas Doll in 2015, 2016 and 2017, and Marko Nikolic in 2019.
