Hungary vs Netherlands: 18th meeting on the horizon
Hungary dominated the early fixtures of this contest but the Dutch have won the past nine matches between the pair.
Hungary's period of dominance lasted from 1930 to 1984, during which time they won five games in a row, but since the role reversal has been stark, the Oranje scoring 34 times against Hungary in their past six match-ups. One of those came nearly 11 years ago to the day, when Hungary suffered the worst defeat of their 124-year history, 8-1 in Amsterdam, a result which also ended their 2104 World Cup qualification ambitions.
The record so far: 17 matches, five wins, two draws, 10 defeats. Goal difference 29 - 51.
Hungary's top scorers against the Netherlands are István Avas and Balázs Dzsudzsák with three goals each, one ahead of József Turay, Lajos Tichy, Kálmán Mészöly and Zoltán Gera who each scored twice.
These two national teams will face each other in the Puskás Aréna for the first time, but the Dutch have already played here once before in 2021, numerous of the current squad having lost to Czech Republic in the round of 16 at a delayed Euro 2020. Furthermore, Hungary's former head coach, Erwin Koeman, will face his former employers as one of his brother Ronald's assistant coaches.
