Hungary Women face uphill task after narrow Scotland loss
Alexandra Szarvas's side created several gilt-edged chances, but poor finishing and a second-half defensive mix-up left them a goal behind after the first leg of their Euro semi-final against Scotland in Budapest's Bozsik Aréna on Friday evening.
A fiercely-contested but ultimately attritional first-half was followed by a much more open second half between hosts Hungary and visitors Scotland, the former unlucky not to take a 57th-minute lead when Dóra Zeller slid Ann Csiki's low cross just wide of the left post just seven metres from goal. Instead, first blood went to Scotland three minutes later when a left-wing cross from Docherty rebounded off a home-team defender and fell invitingly for Martha Thomas to crash the ball into the roof of the net from close range.
Scotland seemed to dominate possession and had further opportunities to score, but Hungary had the best chance thereafter, substitute Emőke Pápai reaching the left byline and cutting the ball back to a well-placed Csiki, but her scuffed shot was easily repelled. This means Scotland return home with a 1-0 victory ahead of the second leg at Easter Road, Edinburgh, on Tuesday evening (kick-off is 19:30 GMT, so 20:30 CET), but Hungary will believe there were enough positive elements in Friday's display to give them hope of a positive result in Scotland.
Alexandra Szarvas, Hungary Women head coach:
"I'm very proud of the girls, because they really battled to the end of the match and took their hearts and souls out onto the pitch. We had our chances, so we'll try to take these in the next match. We missed a bit of luck today, because if we'd taken one of our clear chances, we could have drawn 1-1 or even won by a single goal. Our attitude was an example for us to follow and we'll need this kind of mentality in the second leg too."
