Hungary Women put four past Serbia
A first-half strike by Dóra Zeller preceded a late Anna Csiki goal sandwiched between a brace of goals for substitute Emőke Pápai as Hungary cruised to a 4-0 victory against Serbia in Szeged on Thursday.
Before the match, Fanni Vagó was recognised for earning her 126th cap, thus drawing level with Hungarian record appearance-maker Angéla Hummel-Smuczer. The game then got underway and Serbia actually threatened to score first, but Hungary soon settled and could have taken the lead well before Zeller's 25th-minute opener, the arriving midfielder dispatching a rebound after the visiting goalkeeper had beaten out Bernadette Zágor's shot.
The away team again started the new half well but again Hungary swiftly regained the initiative and were placed further in the ascendancy when Serbian forward Milica Mijatovic was dismissed for a second bookable offence on the hour mark. That superiority was finally translated into goals when Pápai entered the fray, firstly slipping the ball past the goalkeeper and into the net in the 78th minute and then running from the halfway line to the opposing penalty area and crashing in a drive under the crossbar to seal a 4-0 victory, Anna Csiki having added a third goal via the penalty spot just minutes earlier.
Margret Kratz, Hungary's German head coach:
"It's a great pleasure for me to be here coaching the national team and to be involved in this match. In the last 26 minutes there was a very young team on the field, I made six changes and every time they were younger players who got a chance so this made our achievements in the match even better. Our attacking game got better and better and Emőke scored twice, the second one being particularly great. Now joint-record appearance maker Fanni Vágó is a really excellent player and we can rightly mention her in the same breath as another 126-time national-team footballer. I followed the team's matches before taking over the national team and I've been to Hungary before in UEFA, so I knew the team's style of play. I tried to observe the team and I think we can play together much better than our place in the world rankings shows. Today, I focused first on defence and then on attacking in the second half. The squad members were very motivated and understood what we expected of them. It turned out that the combination of senior players and young footballers created a very strong group", Margret Kratz told mlsz.hu.
