Jakabi retires from national-team duty

The only Hungarian women's footballer to have won the UEFA Champions League has represented her country since 2007.

Zsanett Jakabfi started her career as a youth in Somogyvár, before moving to MTK Hungária at the age of 14. During her five seasons at Hungária körút, she scored more than a hundred goals and became a Hungarian league champion.

Her move abroad came in 2009 when she was transferred to Wolfsburg, with which team she has won the German championship a total of six times and can also claim to be a six-time German Cup winner. Jakabfi has won the Champions League twice with the same club and was also a finalist last season.

The prolific striker first appeared in the national team in 2007 and became the 115th footballer to play for the Hungarian women's football team, her debut coming against Slovakia in a friendly match and a competitive bow soon on on the horizon in a European Championship qualifier against Republic of Ireland. In total, Jakabfi has played 62 times for Hungary in the last 13 years, scoring 31 goals in that time.

"In 2007, my big dream came true when I was able to wear the Hungarian coat of arms for the first time. I am proud to have been able to represent Hungary as a footballer for 13 years but now I want to say goodbye after all these years. It wasn’t an easy decision for me, but I feel like the time has come. I would like to thank all my coaches and players for all the past memories. I will continue to support the team and I wish the girls all the best. C'mon Hungarians!", Jakabfi told mlsz.hu.
