János Göröcs laid to rest
Újpest's legendary Olympic bronze-medal-winning, 62-time Hungarian international midfielder János Göröcs was laid to rest in Megyeri út cemetery on Friday.
Family, friends, former teammates and sporting associates including the likes of Antal Dunai, András Tóth, Sándor Zámbó, Péter Juhász, Ernő Noskó, Gyula Rákosi, István Szőke, György Gedő, István Jónyer, Jenő Kamuti, pupils at the Újpest Football Academy andmany fans of the Lilac and Whites laid flowers and wreathes by the coffin of Göröcs, who passed away on 23rd February aged 80 years old.
Amongst those who paid tribute to one of Hungary's greatest ever players were MLSZ spokesman Jenő Sipos; actor László Lippai; MLSZ vice-president Sándor Berzi, who summarised Göröcs' sparkling career and concluded he: "was the master of organising play. Hungarian football and Hungarian sporting life will be poorer for his departure".
Former teammate Antal Dunai also spoke on behalf of the Hungarian Olympic Committee:
"I played with 'Titi' for years. It was a big thing, an honour to play in such a great side as his. If he'd been allowed to move abroad, he'd have had a hige career. We looked up to him on and off the pitch and it was my pleasure to be in his company".
At the request of Göröcs' family, UTE Circle of Friends honorary president András Somos also bade farewell to Hungary's footballing great as did 4th district mayor Tibor Déri. László Kiss-Rigó, the Catholic Bishop of the Szeged-Csanádi region, led the funeral Mass.
