Today marks the 70th birthday of János Nagy III, who played for the national team sixteen times in the 1970s as a player for Videoton.

The Székesfehérvár-born defender made his debut in Hungary's top tier on March 1st 1970 and by September 27th 1980 he'd played 291 top-flight matches for Videoton, scoring two goals. His greatest success was finishing 2nd in the 1975–1976 Hungarian league championship, at which time he was at the peak of his career. Between September 28th 1974 and October 13th 1976, he was key member of the Hungarian men's national team, mainly playing as a centre-back. In terms of position, he played a similar role at Vidi until the end of the summer of 1975 when head coach Ferenc Kovács moved him to the right side of defence.

Nagy III played only the first of the 1978 World Cup qualifiers, aginst Greece in Piraeus, after which head coach Lajos Baróti entrusted the role to Péter Török and Győző Martos. Interestingly, Nagy III made his national team debut against Austria in Vienna in 1974, and also played his last match there in the autumn of 1976.
In addition to the full national team, he also played for the youth national team, the league representative team, the Olympic team, a Budapest city XI (even though he was never a member of a capital club…) and the B-national team.

After leaving Videoton at the end of 1980, Nagy III represented Várpalota Bányász SK (1981–1982), Keszthelyi Haladás (1982–1988), ASV Neufeld (1989), and FC Keszthely (spring 1998).
