Kratz starts reign with goalless draw

Margret Kratz handed debuts to several players during her first game as women's national-team head coach, her players earning a goalless draw against Bosnia Hercegovina in Telki on Tuesday.

This was the German coach's first match in charge of Hungary but it was also a special occasion for Fanni Vágó, who also wore the armband as team captain, while playing for Hungary for the 125th time. She is now just one behind record-holder Angéla Hummel-Smuczer who has 126 caps.

In the Bosnia-Hercegovina team, there was at least one familiar face, team captain Melisa Hasanbegovic currently playing for second-placed FTC-Telekom in the Women's Simple Liga.

Torrential rain and wind also made things difficult for the teams but the hosts tried to dominate from the outset, Bernadett Zágor fashioning an attempt on goal almost immediately, but in general, Hungary were stopped by an organised away defence throughout the first half, despite maintaining more possession.

The half-time break saw two debutants join the fray in Luca Papp and Csilla Savanya, but the pattern of the game continued in the second half; lots of possession but with no attacking ruthlessness. Later, Laura Kovács and a third debutant, Emőke Pápai, came on as subsitutes, followed by Virág Nagy soon too, but there was to be no winning goal, Bosnia-Hercegovina's defence holding out for a 0-0 draw, the second draw in the two teams' head-to-head history.

Margret Kratz, Hungary Women head coach: “On the one hand, I’m not happy because we didn’t score, even though we dominated the game throughout. On the other hand, I’m glad we created a lot of good situations and were able to keep control. Later, in the second half, I was able to bring on six young players, three of whom were playing for the first time in the national team, and they all took their chances. Csilla Savanya is 16 years old and put on a great performance in central defence, while Emőke Pápai is 17 and Luca Papp Luca is 18 years old, but both also played very well. We also missed four of our key players today due to injury, so at the end of my first training camp, I can say that if we can count on their experience again, we'll have a great team!"
