Last-gasp Hungary prevail over Poland

Fanni Vágó was the match winner as Margret Kratz's side earned a tight 2-1 victory over Poland on the second day of the Pinatar Cup in Spain.

Following a 2-2 draw and penalty-shootout heartache against Russia on Wednesday, Hungary Women continued their Pinatar Cup campaign in the lower section of the tournament with a match against Poland on Saturday. After a decent start, Hungary deservedly took the lead through a 22-metre drive by Henrietta Csiszár, but Poland levelled matters through Zawistowska in  the 20th minute. Poland threatened to go in front subsequently but thanks to the feats of goalkeeper Barbara Bíró, the first half ended in a draw.

The match was again even after the break, albeit less open, but still Bíró needed to be alert. A draw seemed inevitable but in the 91st minute, Dóra Zeller released Vágó, who confidently beat the Poland keeper to hand Hungary a 2-1 victory.

"We played well in the first quarter-hour, the result of which was the the first goal, but then we left too much space in the midfield and the Poles took advantage of it to equalize. Most of the match was even but Barbara Bíró still had to make several saves, and in the end we finished the match by scoring a good goal. In our matches so far, it has been characteristic that towards the end we focused more on defending than scoring a goal, but now we managed to attack in the latter stages and thus could score the winning goal", Margret Kratz told mlsz.hu after the match.
