Marco Rossi: We've won a well-deserved victory!

Hungary's head coach believes his team produced the best half of football under his leadership during the first match of this year's Nations League campaign away against Turkey last night, and that Hungary's single-goal victory came thanks to their battling performance.

We did very well in the first half, so much so that I thought it was our best half since I was appointed head coach. Turkey didn’t know some of our players, so subconsciously they may have underestimated us a bit, and I saw they might be surprised by our tactics. We were a little more tired after the break and we had to defend too much because we were defending deeper than in the first half. In the first half we had a lot of opportunities and in the second, our opponent became more dangerous, but all in all we secured a well-deserved victory", Rossi stated after the game.

The Italian coach also mentioned that fringe players had lived up to their promise, and that it had proved to be a good decision to prepare for the clash with lots of analysis, then plenty of tactical changes.

"We gave some less experienced players a chance to prove themselves, but we had to take that risk and in the end everyone worked very hard for the team and we showed that we are united. Playing with three central defenders is not entirely new to us; we've played twice in this system and have only conceded one goal in that time. We’ve looked at a lot of statistics lately and come to the conclusion that our opponents have created fewer situations against us while we line up that way. There was only a little time in which to organise ourselves, but I asked the players to fight for their country and to show that they were capable of playing battling football. This victory was only the first step and there are many more steps ahead of us to achieve our goals, but this match should give us the confidence to continue. We will have an even harder time against Russia because our opponent's players on Sunday have been playing now for a long time - they're six rounds into their league season, so they're expected to be in great physical condition, which makes it even harder for us to gain more points", Hungary's head coach added.
