Markó names Women’s squad for Euro opener in Iceland

Hungary Women's head coach Edina Markó has announced her national squad for the first fixture of their 2021 UEFA Women’s European Championship quaifying campaign, which starts with a tough-looking trip to take on Iceland on 29th August. Youngsters Sára Pusztai and Laura Kovács are included but there are several enforced absentees.

Markó’s squad will face Iceland, Sweden, Slovakia and Latvia home and away in their bid to reach Euro 2021, beginning with a journey to Reykavik to play their Icelandic counterparts. Firstly, though, the players and backroom staff will meet at the national-team training centre in Telki six days earlier on 23rd August for some training sessions and a training match against a young men’s team. All this before the group travels to Iceand on 27th August.

The team will be joined by Sara Pusztai, who is called up from the U19 national team, having already featured in the friendly match against Cyprus on Women's Football Day. It is also not the first time Győri ETO’s young player Laura Kovács has been in the squad but the former U19 captain is yet to make her full debut.

"We talked to women’s U19 coach Sándor Turtóczki about the U19 team's core and since the Icelandic meeting doesn't clash with their fixtures, I've decide to count on Sarah", Edina Markó told mlsz.hu.

Dóra Süle, also from Győri ETO, is back in the squad after recovering from her protracted illness in the springtime.

"The squad formed during the World Cup qualifiers is constantly monitored and our goal is always to invite the best players in the squad. Closest to their peak form are those players from Ferencváros footballers as they have already started their seasons with Champions League qualifiers, indeed, they’ve played three very good matches. I congratulate them on this and that they still had a chance to qualify right up until the last minute of the last match", Markó said.

Unfortunately, the squad is missing the likes of Szilvia Szeitl (FTC-Telecom) and Szabina Tálosi (Haladás-Viktória FC) due to long-term injuries, as well as Barbara Tóth (MTK Hungária FC) who recently underwent surgery to repair a cruciate ligament injury.

"Domestic championships all around Europe are starting again these days so I hope we don't lose anyone else from our squad. It is important that all of the players who’ve been invited will be at our disposal”, added Markó.
