MLSZ decides to allow flags displaying old Hungary borders

The matter of allowing the display of this historical image is one on which MLSZ had requested a clear position from UEFA and FARE.

Accepting the argument of MLSZ, both UEFA and FARE acknowledged that the colours of the historical map of Hungary and the Árpád stripes on their own do not constitute racist behaviour, but this does not apply to additional symbols and inscriptions visible on drapery, nor to fan chants. Based on this, the federation will allow the display of such draperies before and during the next two matches.

In recent days, both UEFA and FARE sent their answers to the Hungarian federation, which this week will organise two national-team matches in Budapest's Puskás Aréna. The two organisations continue to fight against exclusion and racism, and will therefore continue to punish draperies which carry such a message as those would constitute a disciplinary offence. As a result of the negotiations, MLSZ will allow flags and banners which symbolise the respect of historical Hungary and solidarity with fans from abroad to be brought into the stadium, subject to the following conditions:

• they may only depict the map of historical Hungary, not other symbols or inscriptions;
• only red, white and green colours can feature on it;
• the drapery must be presented - in the usual way - subject to its content and the control of fire prevention;
• the drapery in the stadium cannot restrict the fans from watching the match unrestricted.

At the same time, our fans should know that if a racist or political message is placed on any drapery authorised as above, or any racist or political message is attached to the drapery, it will result in disciplinary proceedings in order to protect from harm the perception of our fans, their fellow fans, our team and Hungarian football. In addition to the above, MLSZ asks all fans to refrain from all forms of hatred and exclusion. Hate is not OK!
