Squad announced for upcoming Women’s Euro Qualifiers

Edina Markó has announced her Hungarian women’s national team squad for the European Championship qualification matches against Slovakia and Latvia in November.

Hungary’s women began their Euro 2021 qualification campaign with arguably two of their hardest fixtures – away to Iceland and at home to Sweden - and although succumbing 4-1 and 5-0 to their more illustrious opponents, they gave a good account of themselves for large swathes of both matches. Next come two matches which are eminently more winnable, albeit neither will be easy. First up are Slovakia in Senec on 8th November, before Latvia are the visitors at the Haladás Sportcomplexum in Szombathely four days later.

Markó likened first opponents Slovakia to Croatia, stating that: “A tough task lies ahead of us; the two sides represent a similar level. We last played Slovakia in the Cyprus Cup in February when we got our tactics right and succeeded in winning, but we can’t forget that that was the fourth match for both teams at that tournament. This match will be completely different".

Latvia, like Hungary, might not have acquired any points in Group F yet but they haven’t made life easy for their opponents. “We’ll be facing them after an immensely tough match against Slovakia. There are no easy opponents at this level but what is certain is that we began our campaign against the two toughest ones. We must be realistic when appraising where we are. We’re fourth in the group but we’d like to get some points on the board in our next matches. We hope a big crowd will come out to watch us in Szombathely, especially since local club Haladás-Viktória are the most successful club outside of Budapest in the women’s game”, added Markó.

Two players who missed last month’s game against Sweden have been named in the squad, Anita Pinczi having recovered from an ankle injury and Sára Pusztai being recalled from her starring role for the Women’s Under-19s after they qualified from their group in Turkey to make the elite round. One player who misses out, however, is Alexandra Tóth, due to work commitments. The squad are due to meet up on Monday 4 November.
