The MLSZ is 119 years old

It was 119 years ago, on January 19, 1901, that representatives of thirteen clubs (BAK, BEAC, BSC, BTC, Budai Ganzgyár, Ganz Vagongyár, "33" FC, MAC, MUE, Műegyetemi FC, Postás and FTC) met in a meeting room of the Archduke István Hotel at 1 Akadémia utca in Budapest and, with the involvement of the Racecourse Committee, established The Hungarian Football Federation (MLSZ).

Ferencvárosi TC initiated the formation of the football association on 22nd December 1900, after fierce controversy had broken out in the early days of Hungarian football in regard to players changing teams and a somewhat free and peculiar interpretation of some of the rules.

Géza Jász became the first president of the MLSZ and at its first MLSZ Council meeting on 4th February 1901, the first league championship was announced and its rules adopted. Based on their results thus far, five teams were placed in the top division and eight in the second tier. The first championship took place with the participation of five capital-city teams and the first match became a local derby between BTC and BSC, the former triumphing 4-0 on their way to winning the first championship title courtesy of a 100% winning record.

On October 12, 1902, the official history of the Hungarian men's national team started with a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Austria, but matters improved and the following four matches all went Hungary's way.

The Hungarian Football Federation celebrated its centenary in 2001 and inaugurated the Centenary Monument, a work by Gábor Mihály with the names of every Hungarian national-team footballer engraved on it, which is located in front of the former main entrance of the country's famous national stadium, the Népstadion.
