Two wins, two defeats in Porec
Hungary’s Under 19 men's national team participated in a five-team international tournament in Porec, Croatia, over the first weekend of the new year.
The squad led by head coach Tamás Frank will contest the Under-19 Futsal European Championship qualifiers in early 2021, so this year's team will be preparing with that in mind. As a first challenge, the team travelled to Croatia last week for a five-team international tournament. Hungary started well and went on to defeat Belgium 5-3 in their first match after finding themselves level at 3-3 at half-time, Zoltán Szalmás leading the fight with four goals. On the second day of play, the scenario was similar, just the other way round; a 3-0 lead and a 3-3 half-time scoreline followed by an eventual 5-3 loss to France.
On matchday three, goalscoring chances were at a premium as a 4-0 defeat to Slovenia testifies, but matters improved in the final game on Tuesday, a 3-2 victory over Turkey meaning we finished the tournament with a 50% win ratio.
"These tournaments are good because they give you the opportunity to gain international experience, international level being quite different to the quality of play the players are used to at their clubs. From this point of view, the tournament was perfect for us, although the fact that the four matches were played over four days may have put a little too much strain on the squad. Our performance was patchy; we had some very good and some weaker periods within each match, but this is a natural part of youth-level futsal. The match against the Slovenians was the low point and here the team’s fatigue was most evident, but we can be satisfied with the rest of the matches and we shouldn’t be ashamed of our performances", Tamás Frank told mlsz.hu after the tournament.
