U19 Women finish third in Euro elite-round group
Our Women's U19 national team battled hard in defence and held a top-class Netherlands side until the second half of their final elite-round group match at Telki last Wednesday, but ultimately tiredness set in and class shone through, the Dutch rattling in six goals as they topped the group and qualified for the tournament finals this summer. Hungary finished a creditable third.
Earlier in the elite round, Hungary had lost to Sweden by a single goal and then defeated Slovenia 2-0, but they knew their task against the highly-fancied Dutch in the last game would be very tough.
It was no surprise then that that the Netherlands dominated the ball and the match but Hungary defended bravely and kept the game goalless until half-time. Thereafter, the Netherlands found more space in which to operate as the exertions of the previous few days began to take their toll on the hosts. Eventually, the referee blew the final whistle on a 6-0 defeat but Hungary can be proud of their spirit and performances in this elite-round group which sees them finish third above Slovenia.
Sándor Turtóczki, Hungary Women's U19 head coach: "The Dutch were better than us technically and physically but nevertheless I feel that if we had been a bot more decisive in front of our own goal and taken a bit better decisions, we could have avoided such a heavy defeat. Dutch women's football is one of the strongest in Europe and I'm convinced our opponents today will have a good chance of winning the whole European championship tournament this summer".
