U21s: Hungary to play Germany and Poland in Euro 2023 qualifying
European football's governing body has held the qualifying group draw for the 2023 U21 European Championship in Romania and Georgia.
Our men's U21 national team will start its participation in the U21 European Championship jointly hosted by Hungary on 24th March, but in the meantime it has already been revealed which opponents the team led by Zoltán Gera will have to face in the 2023 European Championship qualifiers.
The tournament in two years' time will be hosted by Romania and Georgia and will feature the two hosts, the winners of the nine qualifying groups, the best group runner-up and the four winners of the playoff matches between the remaining eight group runners-up.
Hungary were drawn out of the pot of fourth seeds based on the team's results in recent years and were grouped with Germany from pot 1, Poland from pot 2, Israel from pot 3, Latvia from pot 5 and San Marino from pot 6. It is interesting that Gera's team are already due to face Germany in the European Championship on 24th March in Székesfehérvár.
“Overall, I feel like we can’t complain about the draw because we couldn’t have got a much better group. At the same time, we will have a very difficult task since we'll have to fight with three teams ranked higher than us to finish in one of the first two places. The Germans are always strong; they have not missed a single European Championship since 2011, and Poland and Israel are very strong", Gera told mlsz.hu.
The qualifying group will start in March this year but the teams participating in this year's European Championship (including Hungary) will only start their campaigns in the autumn.
The 2023 European Championships are open to players born on or after 1st January 2000, which means that a significant proportion of the players participating in this year's European Championships will still be available to Gera and his staff during the next set of qualifiers too.
