Women's Euro hopes ended by defeat in Scotland
A four-goal loss at Easter Road in Edinburgh put paid to Alexandra Szarvas's hopes of leading her Hungary Women's team to UEFA Euro 2025, but despite exiting at the qualification play-off semi-final stage, there are plenty of positives to take from the campaign.
Trailing 1-0 from last week's first leg in Budapest, Hungary needed to ensure they didn't fall further behind in the tie, but Scotland were keen to build on their advantage and managed to do so in the 17th minute, good work from Lisa Evans enabling Samantha Kerr to smash the ball into the net via the crossbar and the body of goalkeeper Lauren Brzykcy. Striker Erin Cuthbert then doubled the lead on the night with a shot from distance just after the half-hour mark as Scotland threatened to turn their dominance into a heavy defeat.
After the half-time break though, Hungary regained their footing in the game and went close to scoring on several occasions. most notably through longer-range shots from Emőke Pápai, substitute Sára Pusztai and Evelin Fenyvesi, but Scotland remained dangerous too and Real Madrid striker Caroline Weir capitalised by scoring Scotland's third goal after on 55 minutes a slick team-passing move. Ten minutes later, Martha Thomas pounced on a loose ball in the Hungary penalty area to set the final result at 4-0 on the night and 5-0 on aggregate as Hungary ended their Euro campaign at the play-off semi-final stage. There have been positive individual and team performances during the past year though, so Szarvas and he staff will look ahead with encouragement at the next major tournament qualification campaign next year.
Alexandra Szarvas, Hungary head coach:
"We took risks in today's game, because a lot was riding on it, but of course the danger with this is that a team can also concede goals. Today, unfortunately the risk didn't pay off. We lost a lot of 50/50s in defence, which Scotland took advantage of. We conceded goals due to tactical errors which we'll talk about and rectify. I'm disappointed because of the result, but we can say that every player did everything they could in this match."
