Women's national team: Markó forced into several squad changes

Hungary Women's head coach Edina Markó has had to deal with the withdrawal of numerous players from the squad to face Sweden and Latvia in forthcoming European Championship qualifiers due to a coronavirus case and subsequent track and trace procedures.

The women’s national-team squad met up on Sunday ahead of their trip to Sweden on Tuesday, where the team will face the hosts and World Cup bronze-medallists on Thursday. After the match, on Friday, the delegation will travel to Latvia, where they will play the second of two European Championship qualifiers within a week on Tuesday 22nd September.

Head coach Markó announced her squad, which already included eight reserve players, last week. However, before the start of the training camp, two coronavirus cases were identified at one of the clubs of the players involved, MTK, so they and their direct contacts, a total of eight footballers, have not joined the group. Furthermore, two more players cannot take part for other reasons, one of which has nothing to do with the epidemic. On the plus side, Ferencváros' six national-team players have returned three negative coronavirus tests in the past week, so they are now able to join up with the squad.

"Clubs do everything they can to protect the health of their players, which is of course currently the most important aspect," Markó said. Fortunately, these are isolated cases, not involving entire teams. The associations also follow all regulations so that the course of the qualifying stages is not endangered. Changes had to be made to the national team squad, but as I said before, I see the task in this situation, and we are trying our best to complete the task with the players at our disposal," Hungary's head coach concluded.

The national-team delegation will undergo two coronavirus tests before the match in Sweden and then again after the match in Sweden and on their return home.
