Zoltán Gera: This team was destined for victory
Following the 2-0 defeat of Turkey, Zoltán Gera highlighted he'd learned a lot from these two most recent Nations League matches, while Kevin Varga said he's just glad to help the national team, whether they're counting on him in training, on the bench or on the pitch.
"We were following the scoreline in the Serbia-Russia match and talked during the break that we could be calmer, but that we have to play for the victory too, so we went out for the second half accordingly. We totally deserved the victory". This is how Zoltán Gera started the press conference after the 2-0 defeat of Turkey, after which he was asked by journalists present about the many absences the team had suffered:
"There is a great community within the team. It would be a big problem for any team if the head coach couldn’t be on the bench for such important matches. The fact that the team still held its own is a good indication of how good a coach Marco Rossi is. There are no starters and substitutes - the squad is one unit. I've seen in these few days that the squad is very much together and was destined to win these matches. These two games were a huge experience for me and I learned a lot from them".
Scorer of the second goal, Kevin Varga, then stated he is trying to build his career step by step, an important step of which was his strike here against Turkey:
"There have been difficulties, I wasn't called up for a long time after my first national team match, so I tried to rebuild myself and I succeeded in Debrecen so much that I earned a move abroad in the summer. That was my aim and it paved the way for a national-team call-up. It is already a great honour to be counted on in the national squad, but it's even bigger if I can be named on the bench and even bigger again if I can make it onto the pitch. I’m about helping the team, whether it’s in training or on the pitch. It's a great pleasure to be able to return to the squad in time for such successes, as it took a lot of time to reach this point. Next year, there is a real football carnival in store for Hungary as, in addition to the European Championships, the U21 European Championship will also come here. I think if any nation deserves this, it is us".
