DVTK shock Fradi in first game of 2021
The first OTP Bank Liga match of the year was expected to go the way of runaway league leaders Ferencváros at home, but bottom-of-the-league Diósgyőr scored late on to snatch all three points in the Groupama Aréna in Budapest on Wednesday evening.
OTP Bank Liga (match postponed from 2nd round):
Ferencváros TC 0-1 Diósgyőr VTK (HT: 0-0)
Goalscorer: Suljic (85)
Ferencvárosi TC: Dibusz - Botka (Lovrencsics, 68.), Dvali, Blazic, Heister - Somalia (Sigér, 77.), Laidouni, Haratin (Skvarka, 86.) - Zubkov (Isael, 68.), Uzuni, Nguen (Gera, 77.)
Diósgyőri VTK: Antal - Grgic, Milovic, J. Hegedűs, Soldo - Márkvárt, Zivulic, Grozav (Pedro, 75.), Augusto - Drazic (Hasani, 83.), Ivanovski (Suljic, 84; Karan, 88.)
From the first minute, the reason why the two teams are at either end of the league table was clear, Diósgyőr initially barely able to cope with the attacks of league leaders Ferencváros. The away team focused exclusively on defending, but that they did well because, despite their dominance of possession, Serhiy Rebrov's side created little in the way of goalscoring opportunities. That was the way it stayed during the second half too; Ferencváros in control, but DVTK defending effectively. Failure to press home an advantage always brings risk though, and so it proved when Diósgyőr substitute Suljic broke away to score the winning goal just a minute after stepping onto the pitch. Remarkably, Suljic only spent four minutes in the game before being replaced in favour of an even more defensive approach in order to protect the one-goal lead and although Fradi attacked purposefully from then on, there was to be no late equaliser.
This was Ferencváros' first home league defeat since a loss to Vasas at the Groupama Arena on 15th April 2017, 61 games ago, a record which included fifty wins and 11 draws. Meanwhile, new head coach Zoran Zekic's first victory mean his team have won again after six consecutive defeats.
