Ernő Noskó turns 75
Former Újpest Dózsa defender, 15-time Hungary international and Olympic football champion Ernő Noskó celebrates his 75th birthday today.
Ernő Noskó was born in Cserhátszentiván on 26th May 1945 but moved to the capital city in the 1940s and played his youth football at Vasas Izzó between 1958 and 1964, at which point he joined Újpest Dózsa. The following year, Noskó made his first-team debut against Dorog in the top division and in the next ten seasons with the 'Lilacs', he only failed to finish in the top three once, in 1966.
During this period, the rock-solid central defender won seven Hungarian league titles (1969, 1970 spring, 1970–1971, 1971–1972, 1972–1973, 1973–1974 and 1974–1975) and two Hungarian Cups (1969 and 1970), as well as being a part of the Dózsa team which reached the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup final, eventually losing to Newcastle United, and the 1974 European Cup semi-final, where only a Franz Beckenbauer-inspired Bayern Munich team could stop his team. Noskó left Megyeri út later that year for lower-league Budafoki MTE where he spent four years, before enjoying the last two years of a stellar career at the Chinoin club.
For the Hungarian national team, Noskó won 15 caps between 25th May 1969 and 14th November 1971, the last nine matches featuring eight wins and one draw. These all came after an Olympic gold medal came his way with the Hungary football team at the 1968 Games in Mexico City.
