Juhász strikes farewell goal as relegation battle approaches climax
Ninety-five-time Hungarian international defender Roland Juhász scored the winning goal in his final appearance in professional football in the 32nd round of OTP Bank Liga fixtures, dispatching a first-half penalty to ensure MOL Fehérvár defeated weakened champions Ferencváros. Elsewhere, crucial wins for Újpest, Paks and Debrecen ensured the race to avoid joining Kaposvár in the second tier next season will continue until the last round this coming weekend.
In an emotional evening at the MOL Aréna Sóstó, a penalty awarded to Fehérvár became the responsibility of Juhász to score after his teammate Nemanja Nikolic sportingly handed over the duty so the three-time Hungarian and three-time Belgian league champion could score on his final appearance in professional football after a glittering 20-year career. Juhász duly sent Fradi goalkeeper Dávid Gróf the wrong way to score what turned out to be the winning goal, the league title having already been claimed by Ferencváros two rounds ago.
The race for third place and the final European qualification spot is now led by Puskás Akadémia with one match to go, their 94th-minute equaliser against Kisvárda courtesy of Thomas Meissner meaning they sit on 51 points, one ahead of Mezőkövesd who lost at home to a late winner by Debrecen's Garba. That three points for 'Loki' wasn't enough to lift them out of the relegation zone but it does mean that victory at home to Paks on Sunday would secure their safety.
Paks's 4-2 defeat of Diósgyőr means they lie ninth on 40 points, two ahead of Debrecen and one ahead of Kisvárda. Újpest, meanwhile, took all three points at home against Zalaegerszeg thanks to a another added-time winner, this time from Ristevski, so they are in eighth position on 40 points, ahead of their final fixture with already-relagated Kaposvár on Sunday. In the round's sixth match, Budapest Honvéd returned to winning ways, defeating Kaposvár 4-2, in part thanks to youth-team product Dániel Gazdag's goal in each half.
