Men's U21s: Two uncapped players in Zoltán Gera's latest squad
Head coach Zoltán Gera has named his Under-21 Hungarian men's squad to face Northern Ireland away on 14th November and host Austria four days later on 18th November.
Hungary Under 21s will play their final preparation matches this year on 14th and 18th November, the first match being played in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland. Four days later, on at 19:00 CET on November 18th, Hungarian fans will have a second chance to see the new Puskás Aréna from the inside, while those who miss out on the stadium's opening match between Hungary's and Uruguay's full, male national teams on 15th November can see the brand-new arena for the first time (information on tickets for this U21 match versus Austria is coming soon).
Zoltán Gera has selected in his squad two footballers who have not been present in the U21 squad thus far. Born in 1998, Adrián Szőke, originally from Vojvodina, plays his club football for Heracles in the Netherlands' top tier, and has never played in Hungarian colours before, having represented Serbia at U18 level. The other potential debutant at this level, Benedek Varjú, is the youngest player in the group, having been born in 2001. He played in the European Championship qualifying mini-tournament with the U19 national team a few weeks ago.
"We are still in the teambuilding phase, as evidenced by the fact that we are trying out new players in the upcoming matches," Zoltán Gera told mlsz.hu. "We want to move forward in more elements of the game; it is important to have a solid defence throughout both matches, while previous games have shown that we need to improve in attack. We've tried to get as much information about our two opponents as possible. The Northern Irish are physically strong, and they grind you down, while one of the great strengths of the Austrian team is that they're very quick in transition, so we have to be careful not to leave space in behind our defence. So far, we have played four games without real success so I think it would give the squad a lot of momentum if we could win and gain the confidence to continue improving. I'm really excited about the team playing their last match of the year in the Puskás Aréna, which represents a huge source of extra motivation for both the team and the backroom staff".
