Merkantil Liga: Haladás and PMFC set the standard with thumping wins
On Sunday’s 1st round of the new Merkantil Bank Liga season, the teams regarded as leading championship contenders failed to impress, Debrecen struggling to victory and Vasas only starting with a draw.
Of the three teams newly promoted to the Merkantil Bank Liga, only Pécsi MFC posted a victory, but it was a memorable one as they beat Dorog 4-0, all the goals coming before half-time. Haladás started with a similarly confident success, a 5-1 triumph coming at the home of Siófok, wich means they top the table after the first weekend. Gyirmót also started with a dominant win, beating Csákvár 3-0 at home, all three goals of which were scored by Norbert Heffler.
Meanwhile Debreceni VSC, reputed to be a serious candidate for promotion to the top tier, created a lot of chances against Budaörs but were indebted to a late goal for their single-goal victory. Although Vasas dominated their home match with Kazincbarcika, the club from Borsod county took the lead at the end of the first half and although Ferenc Bene's team equalised through Róbert Feczesin in the middle of the second half, they weren't able to score a winning goal.
Elsewhere, ETO FC Győr finished their away match in Ajka without a point, while Békéscsaba won the Southern Alföld derby away at Szeged.
