OTP Bank Liga champions to kick off new season at top-flight returnees
The 2020/21 OTP Bank Liga season will run between 15th August 2020 and 15th May 2021, the opening matchday seeing both promoted teams start at home and last season's top two begin their campaigns on the road. The first Ferencváros-Újpest derby match is due to take place in the Groupama Aréna in the 8th round of fixtures.
Merkantil Liga champions MTK restart life in Hungary's top tier with a home fixture against OTP Bank Liga title-holders Ferencváros while fellow promoted side Budafók welcome Kisvárda. Elswehere, Zalaegerszeg, now coming to terms with life without Gábor Márton, will host their former coach with his new club, laster season's runners-up MOL Fehérvár.
Clubs competing in European competition will be able to schedule league fixtures on Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays, thereby allowing the M4 Sport state television channel to broadcast as many live matches as possible. One fixture likely to be the subject of coverage is the first derby of the season between the country's two biggest clubs, Ferencváros and Újpest, the former hosting the latter on 24th October in the eighth round of fixtures.
The league's winter break - one week shorter due to the league starting a month later than previously planned before the COVID-19 pandemic - is due to start after the last fixtures of the year on 19th December and last until 23rd January 2021 when the championship will resume. The final round of the season is due to take place on the weekend of 15th May 2021 and a full fixture list for the whole season will be published in due course.
