OTP Bank Liga: Fradi on brink of league title retention
The 29th round of Hungarian men's top-tier fixtures saw Ferencváros stretch their lead over MOL Fehévár at the top of the league, the former defeating Kisvárda while the latter dropped two points at home to a resurgent Újpest. Elsewhere, already-relegated Kaposvár shocked an under-strength Diósgyőr, Honvéd repeated their Hungarian Cup final exploit by defeating Mezőkövesd 2-1, struggling Debrecen rescued a point from their fixture against Puskás Akadémia and Paks did the same away at Zalaegerszeg.
Ferencváros now need only two points from their final four fixtures to retain their OTP Bank Liga title and become Hungarian champions for the 31st time in their history after a late Dávid Sigér goal - a wayward cross which visiting goalkeeper Minca could only help into the net - saw off ninth-placed Kisvárda at the Groupama Aréna in Budapest on Saturday. Serhiy Rebrov's team have now won 41 of their 52 consecutively unbeaten league fixtures at home and hold an 11-point lead over MOL Fehérvár with just 12 points left to play for.
Fehérvár's hopes of a second league title in three years are therefore all but over after Újpest, now unbeaten in three games following the appointment of Serb head coach Pedrag Rogan, twice recovered from a goal down in Székesfehérvár to secure a draw and boost their chances of avoiding relegation. Debrecen, Zalaegerszeg and Paks will all likely look at their high-scoring draws in the same way, the former halting Puskás Akadémia's surge towards third place and European qualification thanks to Babatunde Adeniji's two goals - one in each half. Zala will no doubt also regret giving up a 3-1 lead, Gergely Bobál's hat-trick cancelled out by goals from Paks' Norbert Könyves, Dániel Böde and in added time from Balázs Balogh. Five points now separate Debrecen in 11th, the second and final relegation spot, and Újpest in 7th position.
In the two other matches of the weekend, Honvéd dented Mezőkövesd's hopes of holding on to third spot in the division by scoring twice in the first half of their meeting in Eastern Hungary, Filip Dragóner's 94th-minute goal turning out to be no more than a consolation strike for Attila Kuttor's team, who now lie only two points ahead of Puskás Akadémia. Behind the club from Felcsút in fifth spot are Diósgyőr, who surprisingly lost 3-0 away at already-relegated Kaposvár, although DVTK head coach Tamás Feczkó's decision to rest a raft of regulars may partly explain the unexpected outcome.
