OTP Bank Liga: Only Kisvárda enjoy home comforts on Saturday
Zalaegerszeg earned their first points of the 2019/20 OTP Bank League season in this fourth round of fixtures, but neither Budapest Honvéd nor Kaposvár could manage likewise. Elsewhere, Kisvárda continued their excellent start by defeating Újpest at home, while Mezőkövesd and Fehérvár impressed again away from home. The latter two currently top the table, each of the two with four wins from four matches.
Budapest Honvéd 2-3 Debrecen VSC (HT: 1-1)
Goalscorers: HON: Lanzafame (44, 82) DEB: Trujic (9), Haris (66), Varga K. (77)
Honvéd: Horváth A. - Batik, Kamber, Niba - Ikenne-King, Nagy. G (Cipf, 71), Gazdag, Kesztyűs, Uzoma (Kukoc, 79) - Moutari (Kulach, 75), Lanzafame
Debrecen: Nagy S. - Kusnyir (Kinyik, 81), Szatmári, Pávkovics, Ferenczi - Tőzsér, Haris - Varga K. (Bényei, 92), Szécsi, Trujic (Csősz, 71) - Garba
It was an exciting start to this match, with the visitors leading in the ninth minute, Trujic converting Szécsi's excellent cross. Honvéd immediately came back into the game and equalised in the 44th minute after a counter-attack, Moutari's unselfish pass giving Dávid Lanzafame a tap into an empty net for his first goal since his return to the club from Ferencváros earlier this month. Honvéd kept up the pressure after the break and even hit the crossbar but it was the visitors who eventually struck next, Haris re-establishing Loki's lead in the 66th minute. With just 13 minutes left, Varga Kevin doubled that advantage and rendered Lanzafame's 82nd-minute free-kick a mere consolation. This was the Kispest club's fourth consecutive league loss of the new season and came against a Debrecen team still with a 100% winning record after their first three fixtures.
Diósgyőr VTK 0-3 Mezőkövesd Zsóry (HT: 0-0)
Goalscorers: MEZ: D. Nagy (50), Karnyicki (56), Cseri (66)
DIÓ: Danilovic - Sestakov, Ndzoumou, Karan, Vági - Tóth Ba. (Tabakovic, 58), Márkvárt - Ternován (Hasani, 51), Tajti (Szabó B., 80), Korbély - Prosser
MEZ: Szappanos - Eperjesi, Neszterov, Katanec, Vadnai - Berecz, Karnyicki - Pekár (Molnár G., 81), Cseri (Vajda, 72), Nagy D. (Takács, 88) - Zivzivadze
The visitors started this fixture in the ascendancy but spurned an opportunity to take the lead which seemed much harder to miss, the ball arriving at Dániel Prosser's feet all alone in front of goal but his shot whistling just wide of the left post. Subsequently, the game became a more even affair with good passages of play from both sides but no serious threats on goal developing. The pace dropped after a drinks break in the 28th minute - necessary due to the intense heat - and thus the deadlock was intact at the half-time break, but that soon changed in the second period, Dániel Nagy's strong, precise header giving Mezőkövesd a 50th-minute lead which was doubled by Karnyicki five minutes later and further extended in the 65th minute thanks to Cseri's excellent free kick. The home side missed that great chance in the first quarter of an hour and had that gone in, the outcome may have been different, but in the end they were well beaten.
Kisvárda Master Good 2-0 Újpest FC (HT: 1-0)
Goalscorers: KIS: Grozav (23, 75)
Kisvárda Master Good: Felipe - Melnyik, Ene, Berios, Protic - Karasuk, Lucas - Seco (Gosztonyi, 13; Hej, 86), Cukalasz, Kovácsréti (Tischler, 66) - Grozav
Újpest: Pajovic - Pauljevic (Bjarnason, 80), Onovo, Ristevski, Burekovic - Sankovic, Nwobodo - Simon K. (Meszaros, 58), Zsótér, Kovács L. (Rácz, 81) - Balázs B.
Although Újpest had more possession in the first half, the Lilac and Whites were almost completely devoid of a threat, Felipe, the home team's outstanding goalkeeper, only having to make a single save. Kisvarda's Gosztonyi was only on the pitch as a sbstitute due to an early injury to Seco but his team had the former Hungary U21 winger to thank for their 23rd-minute lead, his excellent interception and pass giving Grozav the chance to open the scoring, which the Romanian duly did. Their teammate Cukalasz found himself with a great chance to double that advantage at the start of the second half, but he spurned it. Nevertheless, even though the visitors dominated the match, the hosts always appeared more dangerous on the counter-attack. Kisvárda finally scored their second goal after some neat interplay, Grozav scoring his fifth goal in four games so far this season. Újpest kept attacking thereafter but couldn't muster even a consolation goal.
Paks FC 0-2 MOL Fehérvár (HT: 0-1)
Goalscorers: Futács (24), Petrjak (61)
Paks FC: Holczer - Osváth, Lenzsér, Fejes, Szabó J. - Papp - Bartha, Könyves (Remili, 66), Balogh B. - Böde, Hahn (Fejős, 81)
MOL Fehérvár FC: Kovácsik - Nego, Fiola, Elek, Hangya - Nikolov, Hadzic - Milanov, Hodzic (Huszti, 78), Petrjak (Kovács I., 67) - Futács (Scsepovic, 87)
From the outset, favourites Fehérvár dominated possession of the ball and converted that dominance into a 24th-minute lead when Márkó Futács scored. Paks became more adventurous after falling behind and at least succeeded in calling Kovácsik into action in the Fehérvár goal, but they couldn't find an equaliser. In contrast, the visitors from the city of Székesfehérvár used the extra space opened up by their opponents' more open approach to good effect, eventually increasing their lead and deciding the destination of the three points just after the hour courtesy of Petrjak's strike. Paks continued to seek a way back into the game but none was forthcoming, Kovácsik supporting his resiient defence with several excellent saves to ensure the away team prevailed.
Kaposvári Rákóczi FC 0-4 Zalaegerszeg (HT: 0-2)
Goalscorers: Radó (33, pen), Barczi (34), Devecseri (83), Ikoba (89)
Red card: Nagy K. (17)
Kaposvár: Pogacsics - Nagy K., Hadaró (Nagy T., 41), Hegedűs, Fodor - Jakimiv (Vachtler, 38) - Nagy R., Szakály, Nagy J., Csiki (Bíró, 84) - Ádám
ZTE FC: Demjén - Bolla, Lesjak, Devecseri, Tamás - Mitrovic (Holodjuk, 75), Kocsis, Bedi, Barczi (Hudák, 68) - Radó, Bobál (Ikoba, 88)
Both of these two newly-promoted teams were still awaiting their first league points of the season as the fourth round of fixtures dawned. Visitors Zalaegerszeg also left out new signing Zoltán Stieber, the 26-time Hungary international winger who has been plying his trade abraod for 14 seasons and left his most recent club, DC United in the USA, in July. Kaposvár started well but the game turned on the 18th-minute dismissal of their defender Krisztián Nagy for a poor challenge, the away side gradually able to take advantange of their numerical superiority thereafter. András Radó gave Zalaegerszeg the lead from the penalty spot in the 33rd minute, which Dávid Barczi then doubled a minute later but the home side threatened to halve the deficit before half-time and only an offside flag stopped them achieving this early in the second period. Eventually though, the extra exertions caused by the dismissal of Nagy began to tire the hosts and last season's NB II champions took full advantage, further goals from Szilárd Devecseri and Eduvie Ikoba handing Zalaegerszeg their first top-flight win since April 2012 by a 4-0 scoreline.
