Sándor Csányi: Our federation is ready for every scenario
Sándor Csányi, President of the Hungarian Football Federation (MLSZ), spoke at the federation's annual general meeting today about the situation caused by the coronavirus pandemic and confirmed that MLSZ is prepared for every possible scenario in regard to the continuation of the league season. If, based on the advice of health and governmental bodies, there is the possibility to play matches behind closed doors, MLSZ will decide upon this in consultation with the clubs.
"Since the beginning of the pandemic, the MLSZ has followed the regulations laid down by the authorities and, as such, from 16th March all league championships under its jurisdiction were suspended," MLSZ's president confirmed. "Everyone is focusing on NB I and NB II (the top two tiers of Hungarian football), but matches in youth leagues and amateur leagues posed even more danger, because the health of hundreds of thousands of players was at stake. I know everyone misses football, but at the moment there is no way to hold matches behind closed doors either and it's not yet possible to pinpoint a fixed date for when we can reschedule matches. We are in constant contact with representatives of FIFA, UEFA and the relevant government agencies. This issue needs to be handled with extreme caution; we will take into account the regulations of the health and governmental bodies, and if they approve the organisation of closed-door matches, we will make a decision on whether or not to continue in consultation with the clubs and players. We are preparing for every opportunity, but there are still quite a few open questions on how to continue. When the possibility of organising matches is opened up from a legal standpoint, we will consult with the club owners on the continuation (of the season)", Csányi concluded.
