U21 Euros: Hungary to face Romania, Netherlands and Germany
The draw for the group stages of next year's U21 European Championship in Hungary and Slovenia took place in Nyon on Thursday afternoon.
In March and June next year, the future's footballing stars will showcase their talents in Hungary and Slovenia when these two countries host the 2021 U21 European Football Championship, UEFA's second largest tournament at international level.
The continental tournament will break new ground in several ways: it will be the first U21 European Championship to feature as many as 16 teams and the tournament will be held in two instalments, the group matches scheduled for between 24th and 31st March, and the knockout phases to be played by the top two teams from each group between 31st May and 6th June.
All of the major European football nations have qualified for the tournament, so there will be plenty of well-known players from top leagues competing, some of which will likely become superstars of international football within a few years.
Before the draw, the Hungarian national team was placed in the fourth pot of seeds according to UEFA coefficients and placed in Group A. What followed was first seeds Germany, second seeds Netherlands and third seeds Romania being drawn in Group A alongside Zoltán Gera's team.
"The Dutch and Germans clearly stand out in this group, but two years ago, Romania also reached the semi-finals of the U21 European Championships, so they are also expected to be very strong. The most important thing is to get the most out of ourselves. It'll be a great experience for the players to be able to compete with such strong teams in a European Championship we will host", Gera summarised after the draw.
