UEFA Youth League: Hungarian representatives face trips to Albania and Russia
UEFA has conducted the draw for the Youth League, better known as the Youth Champions League, for the current 2020-2021 season, both ETO FC Győr and Ferencváros now due to fight for progression to the last 32 in one-off away fixtures.
In this current edition of the tournament, U19 teams in the Youth League will advance to the next rounds of the competition in single-match ties rather than from groups. The 64 participants include two Hungarian clubs, both of which are participating in the Youth Champions League for the first time.
ETO FC Győr won the Hungarian national championship, while it was thanks to the success of Ferencváros' adult team in reaching the group stage of this season's Champions League that its U19 side has been invited to the youth version of the competition. Since the 2014/15 season, the Under-19 sides of Champions League participant clubs - a total of 32 teams - receive an invitation to compete in the youth edition too.
Possible opponents for Ferencváros had included Borussia Mönchengladbach, FC Barcelona, Liverpool, Lazio, Olympique Marseille, Lokomotiv Moscow and Dinamo Kiev, the Green and Whites eventually being paired with Lokomotiv Moscow in the draw on Wednesday, with the match due to take place in Moscow.
Meanwhile, Győr could have faced any of Celta Vigo, PAOK, APOEL, Górnik Zabrze, Viitorul, Olimpija Ljubljana or Apolonia, but in the end the Hungarian champions were pitted against Albanian champions Apolonia.
The teams will fight for a place in the last 32 on either 2nd or 3rd March.
