Chasing pack gain ground as Videoton and Honvéd both slip up

Top of the table Videoton saw their lead cut to four points as they lost at Vasas, with Thomas Doll’s Ferencváros taking advantage to edge into second place courtesy of victory away to reigning champions Honvéd. Elsewhere, Puskás Akadémia and Debrecen continued their good run of form, Haladás beat Újpest and Paks surprised Diósgyőr.

VASAS 3-1 VIDEOTON (2-1)

Goalscorers: VAS: Burmeister (23’, 83’), Ristevski (28’); VID: Pátkai (12’)

Vasas consigned league-leaders Videoton to their first defeat of the season, all their three goals coming from defenders as they came from behind to shock the Székesfehérvár side 3-1 at the Szusza Ferenc stadion.

Midfielder Máté Pátkai had given the visitors a twelfth minute lead with a fine acrobatic overhead kick. Tamás Kulcsár then spurned a great opportunity for Vasas to equalise, but they would level halfway through first half when Felix Burmeister rose to head home a Máté Vida cross past the outstretched Ádám Kovácsik. Five minutes later they were ahead, Kire Ristevski heading past Kovácsik following a Szilveszter Hangya corner.

Vasas made sure of the points with seven minutes left to play, Burmeister supplying the finishing touch after Mohamed Remili and Kulcsár had played a neat one-two on the left-side of the box. Vasas now sit sixth on thirteen points, seven behind Videoton in first.

PUSKÁS AKADÉMIA 1-0 MEZŐKÖVESD ZSÓRY (0-0)

Goalscorer: Diallo (59’)

Attila Pintér’s Puskás Akadémia won their fourth game in a row courtesy of an Ulysse Diallo strike just before the hour mark. The first forty five minutes produced little in the way of goalmouth action, Puskás Akadémia on the front foot but Mezőkövesd coming closest to a goal with a tame, long-range effort from Marek Střeštík just before the break.

Josip Knežević then tested Tomáš Tujvel with a crisp effort from just outside the box, before Diallo struck the only goal of the game, reacting quickest after the ball had broken of the post following a free-kick one-two between Knežević and Dávid Márkvárt. Diallo now has five goals for the season as Puskás Akadémia rise to fifth in the table, two points behind second-placed Ferencváros.

BALMAZ KAMILLA GYÓGYFÜRDŐ 0-1 DEBRECENI VSC (0-1)

Goalscorer: Tabaković (45+2’)

András Herczeg’s Debrecen are up to fourth in the table after winning on the road at Balmazújváros, their fourth win in a row coming via a goal from Swiss striker Haris Tabaković in first-half injury time.

Balmazújváros had come close to opening the scoring on the quarter-hour mark, Shandor Vayda’s curling free-kick clipping the post, and then on the half-hour mark as Ervin Zsiga’s goal-bound effort was blocked by Ákos Kinyik. Debrecen would be the ones taking a lead into the break however, Tabaković scoring with a glancing header following a free-kick on the right from Dániel Tőzsér. This proved to be the only goal of the game, neither side threatening their opponents’ goal in the second half.

DIÓSGYŐRI VTK 2-4 PAKS (1-2)

Goalscorers: DVTK: Ugrai (7’), Ioannidis (50’); PAKS: Bartha (13’), Bertus (39’), Daru (72’), D. Kulcsár (93’)

Tamás Bódog’s Diósgyőr fell to a second successive defeat as they slipped to seventh place in the table, Paks coming from behind as they move to within two points of their opponents.

The game had started brightly for the hosts; Roland Ugrai converting after Nikolaos Ioannidis had broken clear down the left to tee up the former Haladás and Ferencváros striker. Paks were soon level though, and led 2-1 at the break, László Bartha bundling home after a quick throw from the right, and then Lajos Bertus firing home after the ball broke off Botond Antal and despite the best efforts of Márk Tamás.

Diósgyőr levelled five minutes into the second half, István Verpecz being caught in possession by Ugrai, who returned the earlier favour from Ioannidis to set up the Greek forward for a simple finish. Paks though, regained the lead in the 72nd minute; substitute Bence Daru scoring from close range after good work down the left from Ádám Hajdú. Another substitute, Dávid Kulcsár, added a fourth in injury-time, creating space in which to shoot home after Daru had chested down a Bertus free kick into his path.

SWIETELSKY HALADÁS 1-0 ÚJPEST (0-0)

Goalscorer: Williams (52’)

Haladás secured their first victory under new coach Bálint Pacsi, Australian David Williams proving the match-winner just as he had been in home victories over Debrecen and Balmazújváros.

Neither goal was threatened during a subdued first half, but the hosts sprang into action after the break, first Tamás Kiss stinging the palms of Filip Pajović with a fierce shot, and then Williams on hand to slot home on the counter-attack after Predrag Bosnjak powered his way down the left wing.

Újpest almost equalised immediately, veteran goalkeeper Gábor Király clawing away a deflected Dániel Nagy effort. Kiss then came close for the hosts before Király once again denied Nagy. Újpest continued to press for an equaliser, Soma Novothny having a close-range strike chalked off for offside, as did Myke Ramos at the other end for Haladás.

BUDAPEST HONVÉD 1-3 FERENCVÁROS (1-1)

Goalscorers: HON: Lanzafame (33’ penalty); FTC: R. Varga (6’, 47’), Paintsil (69’)

Roland Varga scored twice to take his season’s tally to ten as Ferencváros move up to second in the table, four points behind leaders Videoton.

Varga gave Ferencváros the lead in the sixth minute, firing high into the net first-time from close-range following a cross from Gergő Lovrencsics. Honvéd came close to equalising not long after, Dániel Gazdag’s effort deflecting off Fernando Gorriarán before skimming the top of the crossbar. Varga then tested Dávid Gróf in the Honvéd goal from distance before Davide Lanzafame brought the home side level from the spot, his seventh goal of the season so far.

Ferencváros were ahead again two minutes into the second half however, Varga stealing in ahead of Dávid Bobál to volley home, and sealed victory in the 69 the 69th minute as Ghanaian Joseph Paintsil met an Endre Botka cross to fire home his second goal in two games.

Former Honvéd man Botka would later be sent-off, leaving Ferencváros to play the last twenty minutes with ten men, but with Honvéd failing to test Dénes Dibusz in the visitors’ goal Thomas Doll’s side secured their first away win in five attempts.
