Cyprus at home then Belgium trip for Under 21s
Michael Boris' U21 national team will continue its European Championship qualification campaign this week with a home fixture against Cyprus in the New Nándor Hidegkuti stadium followed by a tough away game at leaders Belgium four days later.
Hungary U21s have played four qualifiers in this campaign so far, winning at home against Malta and away in Cyprus as well as drawing against both Sweden and Turkey. This leaves Boris' side in second place in the group, level on points with Sweden after four matches and four points behind leaders Belgium with two games in hand, these three teams seemingly the most likely to contest the automatic qualification spot for first place and the play-off spot which will go to the second-placed team on completion of the group's fixtures.
Kick-off time for Hungary's home match with Cyprus on Thursday 22nd March will be 20:00 in the New Nándor Hidegkuti stadium and the second fixture of the week away in Belgium will start at the same time four days later when Belgium provide the opponent in Leuven. Boris' squad features the spine of the team which impressed in last autumn's initial group fixtures but there are one or two new faces including Norbert Balogh who has successfully returned from long-term injury, Debrecen's Kevin Varga and Barnabás Rácz of Szombathely. Aside from Balogh who plays his club football for Palermo of Italy, others to be returning home for the matches from abroad include Dominik Szoboszlai, Ákos Kecskés, Bence Bíró and Dániel Sallói.
"At the time of the squad's announcement I backed those players who had proved in the autumn matches that we can count on them - they deserve this because of their attitudes and performances. I'm happy that we have fewer injuries to contend with and the national team can count on almost every one of its regular squad members during the coming matches. The group is very tight so every point has great significance and even just one bad result could see us fall behind our rivals. Appropriately, victory is our aim at home against Cyprus but we can't assume this will happen just because we won the away fixture, our opponent having already proved that they have very strong parts to their game", Boris told www.mlsz.hu.
